While Zagreb is always a must-see city, Croatia has so much more to offer beyond the city’s limits. For travelers looking to experience the true culture of Croatia and travel a little off the beaten path, consider a trip through some of the country’s historic villages. Below are a few of Croatia’s hidden gems, which feature stunning views and UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Founded on the site of an ancient city, Motovun is a medieval hilltop town surrounded by a protected forest known for its unique environment that lends itself perfectly for growing truffles. With gorgeous vistas overlooking the Mirna River, Motovun is sure to be a delight for both your eyes and your camera roll. Plus, motorsport fans will be excited to wander the birthplace of Mario Andretti. Plan to spend at least half a day here!

Another charming stop is Poreč, a 2000-year-old coastal town in western Croatia. While it is well-known for its gorgeous coastline and beaches, Poreč is also home to the Euphrasian Basilica, which dates back to the 6th century. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Basilica is filled with beautiful mosaics depicting various Catholic scenes. Book a tour to have an expert guide you through the history of the Basilica before stopping for lunch on the water.

Opatija sits on the sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean and is surrounded by bay laurel forests. A year-round resort town means Opatija is a great spot for an overnight. Make sure to take a stroll through the Angiolina town park, which hosts plants from around the world and has been protected since 1968.

Trogir is another lovely coastal town, and its town center is a designated UNESCO Heritage Site due to its stunning Venetian architecture. Wander around the city streets and admire the various castles, churches, and towers which are all a trip down history lane – Trogir is made up of a combination of Romanesque, Baroque, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture. For the best experience, book a tour and get all of the backstories on the beautiful facades.

Consider taking a day trip to Hvar, a small island off of the coast of Croatia. With an incredibly temperate climate and multiple beaches, Hvar is a year-round destination that is billed as one of the sunniest places in Europe. The island is known for its lavender fields and is also the scene of some of Croatia’s best vineyards – both red and white. Take a walking tour through the city proper’s narrow streets and see St. Stephen’s Cathedral along the way before an afternoon wine tasting.

Finally, make sure to visit Varaždin, an adorable town nestled into the Croatian countryside. Varaždin hosts several museums, galleries, and theaters and is known for its flowers and Baroque architecture. Tourists visiting at the end of August can take part in the Špancirfest, a ten-day festival that fills the town center with artists, street, performers, musicians, vendors, and décor.

Croatia continues to grow and shine as a tourist destination. Between temperate climates, stunning coastlines, and hidden cultural gems, the country has something for everyone. Call Sky Vacations to start planning your own experience of Croatia today!
